University of Pittsburgh to Undergo Review of Fetal Tissue Research, Mihalek Announces

PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh has retained a firm to conduct an independent review of the school’s fetal tissue research practices to ensure total compliance with state and federal guidelines, Rep. Natalie Mihalek (R-Allegheny/Washington) announced today.

Mihalek, a legislator from Pittsburgh’s South Hills and a Pitt alum, voiced support for the university’s decision to conduct the review.

“When controversy first arose over this program, I concurred with the university’s leadership that the best path forward was an open and transparent review by an independent third party,” Mihalek said.

Members of the state Legislature and pro-life groups have called the university’s fetal tissue research practices into question, and Pitt consistently refuted any wrongdoing. Demonstrating a dedication to transparency and full research compliance, the University enlisted an outside law firm to conduct the review.

“The review will begin immediately, and a full report will be made available upon completion,” Mihalek continued. “As a member of the General Assembly, with responsibilities to the taxpayers, and also a Commonwealth trustee of the university, it is vital that these questions are answered surrounding this.”

The legislator said the university has retained the firm of Hyman Phelps & McNamara to conduct the review, which will then be referred to the Board of Trustees.

Mihalek said the school has begun to notify elected officials about the decision.
