Brown Named Chairwoman of State House Committee

HARRISBURG – State Rep. Rosemary M. Brown (R-Monroe/Pike) has been appointed to the position of majority chairwoman of the House Urban Affairs Committee, for the remainder of the 2021-22 Legislative Session.

“I want to thank Speaker of the House Bryan Cutler for appointing me to lead this House committee,” said Brown. “As chairwoman, I look forward to working with members to help improve our communities and assist on matters that remain important to municipalities, townships, developments, cities, etc. regardless of their size or location throughout Pennsylvania. As a representative, I have worked diligently with leaders of area neighborhoods and townships in the 189th District and bring to the table a wealth of community and housing experience that I will incorporate into my new leadership role.”

The Urban Affairs Committee is responsible for reviewing legislation regarding housing, specifically affordable housing; community redevelopment; economic development; land use planning and zoning; growth management; infrastructure financing; and issues regarding Pennsylvania's cities.

Additionally, Brown is actively working alongside minority chairman Mike Sturla (D-Lancaster) to change the name of the committee to better reflect the various issues that the committee covers across the board.

“I am seeking, along with my democratic counterpart, Chairman Sturla, to rename the House committee to “Community Affairs and Housing,’” said Brown. “The laws that the Urban Affairs Committee have historically considered deal with communities of all makes and models. Issues of blight, affordable housing and economic revitalization affect all communities. The committee also handles legislation relating to common interest owned communities such as planned communities and condominiums, as well as manufactured home communities.”

“Together with our bipartisan committee members, we agree that the name Community Affairs and Housing is more reflective of the vital work being done statewide.”  concluded Brown.

Committees are vital in the General Assembly’s process of moving legislation forward as they are the starting point for all bill proposals where lawmakers get to offer their initial review. Each bill that members introduce is referred to at least one committee and must be approved by the members of that committee before it can go to the full House for consideration.

Brown will be hosting her first public hearing as chairwoman of the House Urban Affairs Committee on Thursday, June 3, beginning at 9:30 a.m., at the Salvation Army Allegheny Valley Worship and Service Center, 917 Brackenridge Ave., Brackenridge, PA 15014, to discuss Pennsylvania Blight Laws.
